Tips for Becoming a Truck Driver Career
Learning how to become a trucker is a serious decision that most people take when they first start off in the life of truck driving. With thousands of jobs across the country, truck driving jobs are in high demand, as Joseph Sarcona will tell you. This is why there are many schools out there that offer truck driving instruction so people can get the necessary skills to become truck drivers.
Complete Required Training
However, no one can just get a driving license and drive their own commercial vehicle. First, you need to complete a certain number of hours of training through a certified driving school or a school that offers trucking instruction. For example, you will need to complete eight hours of training from a hazmat school in New Mexico before you are able to take the driving exam. Then you will have to successfully complete six additional hours of driving classes at another school.
Become a U.S. Citizen
There are several things that you need to take into consideration when learning how to become a truck driver. One of them is becoming a US citizen. Every truck driver must have a valid passport or have a green card. Green card means that you have fully gone through the naturalization process which includes citizenship and is required by every state in the US. Without a green card you are not legally allowed to operate as a commercial driver.
It is important that you learn how to drive safely because your career is dependent on it. Every year, approximately 13 people are seriously injured or even killed in car-truck crashes. Of those deaths, more than half were involved in accidents where the trucking company was the cause of the accident. So it is very important that you learn how to drive carefully because if you are ever in a crash, you can rest assured that your family will suffer financial consequences. It may be your family who is affected the most because families who lose a loved one in a car-truck crash are entitled to be compensated by the trucking companies.
Take the Exam
The second step is getting certified as a trucker by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration or the GMC. To get your certification, you will be required to take and pass a federal motor carrier safety exam. This exam is divided into sections and you will be required to complete each section of the exam. In order to successfully complete the exam you will need a score of at least 725 out of a maximum of 1000.
Apply for Jobs
Once you learn how to become a trucker you can apply for jobs with any trucking company in the United States and Canada. When you apply you will need to provide proof that you have a high school diploma or GED. Some companies may also require that you have experience as a truck driver in the past. Trucking companies also have their own policies regarding truck drivers and what type of experience you need before you can apply for a job with them. Many companies may also consider your driving record before they give you a chance to apply for a position.
